When The Saints Swing Low

African  American Spirituals and the story of Harriet Tubman

When The Saints Swing Low is a program with interpretations of African American spirituals and some songs from the folk and blues genre.

The arrangements are deliberately kept simple, sometimes almost rudimentary, to allow plenty of room for improvisation. Stories from the life of Harriet Tubman are the connecting element between the pieces.

Harriet Tubman was an African-American freedom fighter.

After her successful escape from slavery, she returned to Maryland many times at the risk of her life and led escaped slaves north to freedom via the Underground Railroad.
